How to Use a Lawn Sweeper to Pick Leaves and Grass Clippings

A lawn sweeper is a yard maintenance equipment that is used to pick up lawn debris. You can use a lawn sweeper to clean your lawn after mowing it or to pick fallen leaves, twigs and other lightweight debris from your yard. When the dead leaves, grass and other debris are left to accumulate on your lawn, they block the growing grass from receiving sunlight and can easily lead to discoloration of the grass. A lawn cleaner operates through a rotating brush mechanism whereby when the wheels rotate the brushes underneath comb through the grass and collects the debris tossing it into a collection hopper.

Using a lawn sweeper to clean your lawn delivers great results which gives you a sense of fulfillment when your yard is looking all healthy and clean.

In order to clean your lawn effectively, you will require; garden gloves, Lawn mower machine, tarp sheet and large lawn collection bags.

To pick grass clippings and leaves using a lawn sweeper, follow the following steps;

First, put on your work gloves to protect your hands from being bruised by sharp objects. Carefully pick the large debris from your yard, this will include items such as rocks, pine cones, tree branches and all items that the lawn sweeper cannot remove.

Mow your lawn while ensuring that the height of the grass is maintained at the same height. Lawn Sweeper will work best on grass that is mowed at the same height.

Pick your lawn sweeper and adjust the height of the brush to be the same with height of the grass. Depending on the model you have, the brush can be adjusted using a dial or a handle that moves forward or backwards. When adjusting the brush, be keen to check underneath the lawn cleaner until the brushes touch the grass.

Once the brushes are adjusted to the desired height, start pushing the lawn sweeper from one corner of your garden. Push the lawn sweeper in paths back and forth across the yard in opposite directions.

To ensure that no debris is left behind, at the end of every path turn the lawn sweeper around and place the wheels in the track of the finished path. If you are using a Tow behind yard sweeper, the process is the similar to a push model however exercise caution by avoiding sharp turns and high speeds.

When the hopper is full of debris, you can use a large tarp or a large sheet to empty the contents of the hopper. To do this, push the lawn sweeper into the tarp and dump the debris onto the tarp or sheet. Depending on the model of your machine, there may be a string or a handle to pull in order to open the hopper.

Once the debris is deposited into the tarp, fold the tarp in half with the debris inside and pour it carefully into lawn bag. If you have a compost pile you may deposit the grass clippings and leaves into it.

Repeat the process of sweeping the lawn following the paths and emptying the hopper until the entire lawn is covered.

Lawn sweepers are more efficient when used on freshly mowed grass that has the same height. You should store your sweeper tool in a dry area such as a garage or storage shed. Finally, most of lawn sweepers are not efficient on wet grass, in case of rain it is advisable to allow the lawn to dry for a day.
